Family-Owned & Operated

A lush, green lawn doesn’t happen by accident in the greater Lansing area. Our distinct four-season climate demands strategic lawn care, especially when it comes to fertilization. At Keast Lawn & Snow, we’ve helped countless homeowners across southern Michigan achieve picture-perfect lawns through proper fertilization timing. Here’s our expert guide to keeping your grass healthy and vibrant throughout the year.

Understanding the Southern Michigan Growing Season

Southern Michigan experiences warm summers and cold winters, with significant temperature variations throughout the year. Our cool-season grasses (primarily Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues) have two primary growth periods: a major one in spring and another in fall. These natural growth cycles should dictate your fertilization schedule.

Early Spring (Late March to Early April)

As the ground thaws and soil temperatures consistently reach about 55°F, your lawn begins waking from winter dormancy. This is the time for your first fertilizer application of the year. This early feeding provides essential nutrients just as the grass roots become active again, helping your lawn recover from winter stress and prepare for the growing season.

For southern Michigan lawns, we recommend applying a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with a higher first number (like 24-4-8) during this period. This provides steady nutrition as your lawn begins its spring growth spurt.

Late Spring (May to Early June)

The late spring application is arguably the most important of the year for southern Michigan lawns. By this time, your grass is actively growing and needs plenty of nutrition to develop strong roots and dense turf.

A balanced fertilizer with weed control properties works well in this timeframe. This application helps your lawn develop the strength to withstand summer heat stress and resist disease. Remember that a thick, healthy lawn is your best defense against weeds.

Summer (July to August)

Summer fertilization requires careful consideration in southern Michigan. Our summer temperatures and potential drought periods can stress lawns, and improper fertilization during this time can do more harm than good.

If you choose to fertilize in summer, use only a light application of slow-release fertilizer, and always water thoroughly afterward. For most southern Michigan lawns, it’s often better to skip heavy summer fertilization altogether and focus on proper watering practices instead.

Early Fall (September)

As temperatures cool in September, your lawn enters its second growth cycle of the year. This is a critical time for fertilization. Fall fertilizer helps your lawn recover from summer stress and prepare for the winter ahead.

We recommend a fertilizer with slightly higher potassium content (the third number on the bag) at this time. Potassium helps improve disease resistance and cold tolerance, making your lawn more resilient through winter.

Late Fall (October to Early November)

The final fertilization of the year might be the most overlooked yet is extremely valuable for southern Michigan lawns. Applied just before the lawn goes dormant (usually when you’re making your final mower cuts), this application focuses on root development rather than leaf growth.

Choose a winterizer fertilizer with higher potassium and phosphorus levels. While you won’t see immediate results, this fertilizer strengthens the root system throughout winter, setting the stage for a quick green-up next spring.

Professional Care Makes the Difference

While this guide provides general timing recommendations, every lawn has unique needs. Soil type, grass variety, shade conditions, and usage patterns all affect your optimal fertilization schedule.

At Keast Lawn & Snow, our experts evaluate these factors to create a customized fertilization program specifically for your southern Michigan lawn. Our professional-grade fertilizers and precision application techniques ensure your lawn receives exactly what it needs when it needs it.
